When you order stainless steel lockers, work tables or lab cupboards, the first question is the grade. SS 304 and SS 316 look identical, but they behave differently in harsh environments. Here is how to choose.
What is SS 304?
The most widely used stainless steel, with about 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It offers good corrosion resistance, is easy to fabricate and weld, and is cost-effective for most indoor industrial, food and canteen uses.
What is SS 316?
SS 316 adds around 2% molybdenum, which greatly improves resistance to chlorides, acids and saline conditions. It costs more than 304.
Quick comparison
| Property | SS 304 | SS 316 |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion resistance | Good | Excellent (chlorides, acids) |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Canteens, offices, dry areas and general factories | Pharma clean rooms, chemical areas and coastal/wash-down areas |
| Weldability | Excellent | Excellent |
Which should you choose?
Choose SS 304 for most lockers, canteen counters and work tables in dry or normal environments. Choose SS 316 where furniture faces frequent chemical cleaning, salt, acids or strict pharma requirements.
